About the Saltire Motif
In 1385, the Scottish Parliament decreed that Scots should wear a white St. Andrew’s Cross to identify them. Scotsmen first hoisted a Saltire flag with white cross and blue background, as we know it today, in 1512. The fierce rampant lion is often considered the unofficial national flag. The Standard of the Earl of Douglas allegedly featured both a St. Andrew’s Cross and a Rampant Lion in 1388.
