About Celtic Knots and Interlacing

This ring’s design resembles interlacing ropes. These ropes represent the rigging of ships that many in the British Isles may be accustomed to, especially those in coastal regions and fishing communities. The cable twists on Aran jumpers and ganseys also represent rigging. A lot of cable motifs on Aran sweaters are inspired by stonework carvings on high crosses and old castles and buildings. 

In the Middle Ages, Irish monks hand drew interlacing patterns within illuminated manuscripts, namely the Book of Kells. This knot is a single line connected, a metaphor for the soul that these monks believed has no beginning nor end. It’s basically a more complicated version of the infinity sign.
