The Celtic Serpent

Since the serpent is a common motif throughout human history, it’s no surprise that the serpent has its place in Scottish culture. From the Pre-Columbian cultures in the Americas, Middle Eastern religions such as Christianity, creation stories originating on the African continent, to various Asian religions and cultures, such as Hinduism, this animal takes part in many sacred stories across the board. The Celts are no exception. Scholars associate the serpent with the Celtic god Cernunnos. The serpent faces included on this buckle have horns, like the serpent held by Cernunnos in a 4th Century BC stone carving.

The snake represented immortality in the Celtic religion for its ability to shed its skin, essentially being reborn anew. Also, there are numerous representations of serpents in Celtic artwork, including the Christian illuminated manuscripts produced by Irish monks. In Scottish folklore, a beithir is a very large snake or dragon creature that is very venomous. And of course, everyone knows about the serpentine Loch Ness Monster.
