Depending on who you talk to, they may be historically accurate or not, but our Ancient Kilt is much cooler and more practical than a Great Kilt for hot weather wear. We recommend them to anyone looking for the Renaissance Highland look.

The Ancient Kilt is essentially a Phillabeg with extra tartan attached for a sash. It is different from a Great Kilt because it is made from single-width fabric (25-30 inches wide) instead of double-width, which means you don't have the bulk of fabric above the belt that you do with a great kilt. The Ancient Kilt is made from a longer piece of tartan fabric than the Great Kilt, which allows you to pleat it leaving 2-3 yards as a sash that can be worn over the shoulder. Normally, you pleat the kilt each time you wear it, and, like the great kilt, the only thing that holds it together is your belt. As a convenient option though, we can sew the pleats in place for you with Cheater Pleats™
