These are the same style Kilts worn in the movie “Braveheart”. Our Ancient Kilts are the perfect highland attire for Renaissance festivals and other reenactment events. Depending upon who you talk to they may or may not be historically accurate, but our Ancient Kilt is much cooler and more practical than a great kilt for hot weather wear. We recommend them to anyone looking for the Renaissance highland look.
How is an Ancient Kilt different?
The Ancient Kilt is basically a Phillabeg with an extra 2-3 yards of tartan attached. The extra tartan is there to be worn as a sash or a fly plaid, once the kilt is pleated. It differs from the Great Kilt because it is made from a longer piece of single width fabric (25 – 30 inches wide). This means you don’t have the bulk of fabric above the belt that you would with a Great Kilt. (Great Kilts are made from double-width fabric, 54-60 inches wide). Normally, you pleat the kilt each time you wear it, and, like the great kilt, the only thing that holds it together is your belt. As a convenient option though, we can sew the pleats in place for you with Cheater Pleats™.
Wearing it the old fashioned way is nice, but if you don’t want to have to pleat your Ancient Kilt every time you wear it we will pleat it for you and stitch in a hidden waistband to hold it all in place for an additional $50. This makes it much easier to wear and no one will even know you didn’t pleat it yourself! To assist in getting and keeping the kilt on we can add a leather strap and a buckle inside the kilt for just $15 more. The strap is hidden out of sight and allows you to tighten up the inside of the apron so you are not as dependent upon your belt to hold it all together. It’s not necessary but it is really convenient, and is well worth the extra $15 if you are getting the Cheater Pleats™ anyways.

1) Measure comfortably around your waist where you normally wear your pants.
2) Measure around your hips at the fullest point (usually about 6” below the waist)
3) Measure from your waist to about the middle of the knee. It is best if you have help, because bending even slightly will change the measurement.
4) Your height.
