The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III. The Legend: A Norse army was attempting to sneak up to a Scots army encampment. During which, a barefoot Norseman stepped on a Thistle, causing him to cry out in pain and alerting Scots to the presence of the invaders.
