Welsh Cilts (Kilts)

Modern Style Welsh Kilts (Cilts)

Welsh cilts and Welsh tartans are fairly recent modern inventions, but are no less important as a way of celebrating your Welsh heritage. Welsh cilts are becoming increasingly popular, and it's no wonder - everyone agrees that a good lookin' Welshman looks even better in a cilt!

Welsh Formal Kilt
Hand–stitched pleats and lots of attention to detail make these the nicest cilts available. Made with at least 8 yds of Tartan and constructed to last a lifetime.

Welsh Casual Kilt
The Welsh Casual Kilt is a great option if you want a nice looking cilt without spending as much money. Nearly identical in appearance to our formal kilts, casual kilts are machine stitched instead of hand stitched, and made with less tartan.

Historic Style Welsh Cilts

There is little evidence that the Welsh ever wore kilts (cilts) historically. Welsh tartans and Welsh cilts are modern inventions. Nevertheless, our Welsh tartans are still a very popular choice for those of Welsh descent who want to wear a historic style cilt, so we have made them available!

Welsh Ancient Cilt
The Welsh Ancient Cilt is made from a long piece of single-width fabric, about 25" wide. This allows you to pleat the cilt with 2-3 yards left over that is worn over the shoulder as a sash.

Welsh Phillabeg or "Little Cilt"
The Phillabeg is an early predecessor of today's modern cilt, dating back to at least the late 1600's. It is simply a length of tartan about 25" wide and about 4 yds long, loosely bunched or pleated, and held about the waist with a belt.

Welsh Great Cilt
It is hard to beat a traditional Great Cilt. When you belt it on, more than half of the fabric is above the belt. This extra fabric can be bustled up behind you, pinned over the shoulder, or worn over both shoulders like a cloak.
